miss b loves........cream tea on a steam train!

A couple of Sundays ago we enjoyed a cream tea with a difference....on board an old-fashioned steam train travelling through the Lancashire countryside. This was a surprise treat....and I would never have guessed how we were going to spend the afternoon!

We arrived at Bury station to be greeted by a scene straight out of Harry Potter!

The East Lancashire Railway has been restored to its historical glory and the vintage Pullman style dining carriages retain many of the original 1920s features.......polished wood panelling, sliding windows and plush velvet seating .... the perfect place to enjoy a cream tea....a very English tradition.

The whistle was blown and we were off on our journey.......

We tucked into our selection of scrumptious cakes.......

Difficult to choose a favourite but .....the carrot cake (with an orange flavoured chocolate carrot) and the stawberry dipped in delicious chocolate satisfied my chocolate addiction!

Of course there were scones .... with jam and clotted cream ...

All these sweet treats had been prepared by the award-winning Slattery's a local company. The attentive staff kept bringing us  more tea.....

The only disappointment was the British weather......non-stop rain throughout the journey and difficult to fully appreciate the pretty stone cottages and countryside!!

An hour and twenty minutes later we were back at the station ...

......looking at the old adverts from a bygone era............

Back in the car and typically .....the sun came out and finally we were able to enjoy the Lancashire countryside!!

PS There's a full programme of events during the year here and dining opportunities including lunches, themed dinners and even murder mystery nights(!)here.

Definitely different!

  4. I always love a good afternoon tea, but this sounds like the most charming experience - I was just love to go on it myself, especially because part of my family is originally from Lancashire! The train car looks like something out of a wonderful film and those cakes have me wondering if I could get away with eating dessert for lunch. Thanks for sharing this, Miss B!

  6. What a fabulous adventure my friend! There is a train that travels the countryside from a near by town. Since moving here we have said we are going to take a trip on it (almost 6 years later - have not done it). Your post has inspired me to look into more seriously ... 8. The mystery train sounds very fun, maybe we have something similar in our area? I hope to take the kids on a Christmas Train, The Polar Express, through the NC mountains this year. We'll see, and thanks for the beautiful pictures!

  9. Miss B, what a wonderful experience! They restored that train to perfection. It does look like Harry Potter. That's one thing on my bucket list (to take a train). I love that they have themed dinners, events and mysteries. That makes everything so much fun. Thanks for capturing this and those sweets look delicious.

  14. Oh wow, this looks lovely. I know a few people in my family would really appreciate this. The only time I have been to Lancashire is on business when I was meeting clients in Ribleton, Preston. I live in Birmingham and should really start finding out more about places to visit in the UK. The train station does remind me of a scene from Harry Potter ha!

I love reading about your adventures ... makes me feel as if I work too much, as you're having many more adventures away than I am right now! lol I'll have to remedy that! ;) Have a wonderful new week, sweet! xo ~S
