miss b loves ..........one final sweet taste of summer

A couple of weeks ago it was looking as if autumn had arrived far too early with chilly days and overcast skies ...... but summer is back! It's blue skies and warm temperatures(at least for this time of the year in England) What a treat!

A chance to enjoy a final taste of summer too with a home-made raspberry Pavlova. There are certain foods which instantly make me think of warm sunny days and this is one of them .....

This meringue-based dessert is said to have been named in honour of the Russian ballet dancer Anna Pavlova during one of her tours to Australia and New Zealand in the 1920s. There seems to be a long-running dispute about which of the two countries actually invented the dish. The Oxford English Dictionary and some research suggests New Zealand but the debate continues!

Having tried a number of recipes, this one from Delia Smith's Complete Cookery Course here is a favourite. The meringue is crispy on the outside with a soft marshmallow-like centre.....

I know it's a very sweet, indulgent dessert ..... but such a treat!

We took advantage of the warm weather to go for a leisurely walk along the coastal path at Lytham St Annes, about twenty minutes drive from home. The windmill looked resplendent against the deep blue sky. I don't think I've ever seen the sky this blue in this part of the world in September before!

This was the first time I had noticed the fish on top of the weathervane at The Old Lytham Lifeboat House  next door to the windmill. A lifeboat was first stationed at Lytham in 1851.

Five o'clock and still cloudless!

As much as I enjoy the rich autumn colours and all that the new season brings, I'm happy to take advantage of this extended summer for just a little longer.

An Indian summer perhaps? I hope so!

  9. I've only had pavlova once and it was such a delicious treat! We also had a surge of summer weather in the past week where it was actually hotter than most of August. I didn't mind since I'm not quite ready to say goodbye to summer yet.

  12. Yes, I'm quite happy with the extended summer weather, still donning my sandals and wearing my shades but I haven't been able to enjoy it as freely as I've liked because of some new work commitments. I'm not overly keen on meringue, more of a cheesecake/apple crumble person me, but your images look delish.

I am so ready for Autumn, as it has been pretty hot here lately. We had cooler temperatures for awhile, but this past week was so much warmer.

  39. I love Pavlova, so yummy. It's hilarious the rivalry between Australia & NZ about who invented it. Evidence does seem to suggest NZ but I mentioned this to my cousin's husband who's Australian & a chef and he actually took offence at it, lol!
