I love the way a fragrance can evoke a particular place, memory, person or event. Psychologists refer to this as the 'Proust Effect' after the French writer Marcel Proust first described this connection between scent and recollection. Sometimes when a person walks by, you get a hint of his or her perfume - you realize you know that smell and for a moment you slip back in time to a particular place........
For me the smell of fireworks, certain foods or even shampoo(!) can also bring back memories....of childhood or a holiday - ylang ylang immediately transports me back to Mauritius and nutmeg takes me to Grenada ......
My choice of perfume depends very much on the occasion or the season with floral fragrance always a favourite and I wear one of these five every single day.
1. Elle by Yves Saint Laurent - so feminine
2. Royal Water by Creed
3. Oud Wood by Tom Ford
5. Black Violet by Tom Ford
It's fair to say that mr b loves his fragrances too but my favourites are without doubt.... .
1. Creed Erolfa 2. Chanel Allure Homme Sport
I love to have gorgeous fragrances around the home ........
3. Molton Brown Amber Cocoon Hand Wash - richly spiced
4. The White Company Winter candle 5. Molton Brown Blue Maquis Hand Wash - aromas of Mediterranean maquis - Corsican fir, rosemary, nutmeg...
and finally ...a few of my favourite perfume quotes.......

'Perfume puts the finishing touch to elegance - a detail that underscores the look, an invisible extra that completes a woman's personality. Without it there is something missing.'

It's so true...a trip back in time! :)
ReplyDeleteYes, I get a very strange memory whenever I smell amber. I like to think it was my former life at Versailles! Thank you for your lovely comments. XO

Those quotes are lovely. And so true about the associations that are imprinted upon us by fragrances ~ I was shopping the other day and caught a hint of the perfume my grandmother used to wear. Such fond feelings surfaced in a heartbeat. Thank you for visiting me ~ it's so nice to meet you.
ReplyDeleteI never used to be in to perfume, but I've got more interested in it recently. My current scent is Chloe but I love learning about new ones so thank you!
ReplyDeleteI never understood the power of fragrance/candles until I was gifted one from Diptyque, that has the ability to calm me and soothe me after a bad day at work. Well worth the investment!

So true! I sometimes smell a fragrance on a complete stranger and it brings back memories. When I sold my house, I always made freshly brewed coffee and baked some bread - it helps potential buyers to make up their mind. It's true! ;-) Have a lovely evening xo
ReplyDeleteThere's no bigger compliment for you & your fragrance than when a person says "this smells like you" :)
ReplyDeleteYou've got a grand collection for sure!

I worked at a fragrance counter when I was in university. The world of perfume still fascinates me, particularly how scents and memory are so deeply inter-related. The relationship is really amazing. I still instantly recognise Stella by Stella McCartney when I smell it on someone, and it's been years since I stopped selling perfume.
ReplyDeleteYour favourite fragrance are all beautiful, but I especially love Tom Ford. It's next on my wishlist when I need a few fragrance :)
