miss b loves........afternoon tea at Gilpin Lodge Hotel, The English Lake District

I love the English Lake District at any time but especially in the autumn with the gorgeous rich golden colours.

I like it even more with the promise of afternoon tea on a Sunday afternoon in a Relais & Chateaux Hotel! The Gilpin Lodge afternoon tea is a very traditional affair served in the wonderfully comfy yet stylish lounge - this really is an upmarket English country house hotel!

Our coffee table was set with white linen and silver and then the feast began....

The salmon mousse served with brioche fingers was divine and the finger sandwiches with traditional fillings, including melt-in-the-mouth smoked salmon, were served with hand-cooked crisps.

The cake selection looked so pretty with mini-sized treats so that we had a good chance of sampling them all. There were meringues topped with scrummy lemon curd and a fresh rasberry, amazing carrot cake, drop scones but of course no English afternoon tea would be complete without traditional scones, jam  and clotted cream. These were no ordinary scones - they were, quite possibly, the best I've tasted (if only mine were as light as these)and I've had a fair few in my role as 'Afternooon Tea Addict.'

We tried, we really did, but we just could not manage the brownies  with crushed pistachios (a delicious combination) and the fruit cake (but thankfully they were soon taken away and packaged to take home for later.)

We shall return (very soon, I hope!) for dinner and preferably stay for the weekend! The staff are so delightful - professional and friendly (every member of staff who walked by greeted us - from the moment we made our way across the car park!)
