Pearls symbolise understated elegance and class and have been strung around the necks of style icons over the decades. Screen goddesses in Hollywood movies and celebrities have certainly reinforced the glamour of pearls........
Coco Chanel, in the 1920s, gave pearls their iconic style status and she was rarely seen without her signature strings of pearls .....

Grace Kelly preferred the tight, single strand pearl choker......

"I favour pearls on screen and in my private life" Grace Kelly
In 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' Audrey Hepburn wore a striking brooch embellished multi-strand necklace.......

Jackie Kennedy in the 60s often wore pearls .......an essential item of her polished, lady-like look. Several pieces of her simulated pearl jewellery originally worth a few hundred pounds sold at auction in 2010 for over £50,000!
"Pearls are always appropriate" Jackie Kennedy

Elizabeth Taylor preferred a little more opulence ........and she owned La Peregrina, one of the most famous pearls in the world, a Valentine's Day gift from Richard Burton. This huge pearl has a fascinating history having belonged to Mary I of England!

In the 1990s, the late Princess Diana often wore one of her favourite pearl chokers.......

Diana wore a stunning grey gown covered in pearls for the renowned Mario Testino shoot in 1997.....

......and she again chose a pearl choker with her famous black dress (which became known as the 'Revenge Dress') by Christina Stambolian.

More recently, Michelle Obama has regularly shown her penchant for pearls.........

Sarah Jessica Palmer, as Carrie Bradshaw, wore long strings of cultured Akoya pearls in a number of scenes in 'Sex and the City'. Following Coco Chanel's advice? Ropes and ropes of pearls.....

When Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, wore faux pearls (£48 from Heavenly Necklaces!) at the Diamond Jubilee, an on-line frenzy followed and they instantly sold out!

Of course a discussion about pearls would not be complete without Queen Elisabeth, rarely seen without hers .......the epitome of ladylike style........

Spring 2014 ....Karl Lagerfeld recently paid homage to Coco Chanel's signature pearls with a selection of accessories including a 'headset' style necklace with oversized pearls replacing the earpieces ......
"My favourite thing is the new necklace like an earphone, it's two huge pearls but in fact it's very flattering because the huge pearls give a flattering light on the girl's face" Karl Lagerfeld

Often handed down from one generation to another whether natural, cultured (or even imitation!) pearls continue to fascinate people from across the globe and they have adorned chic women throughout time ....
Our enduring love of pearls continues and no matter how many adjectives are used to describe this lustrous gem ...... feminine, elegant, classic, classy......
They are simply .....timeless.

Nothing like a beautiful set of pearls! I love all the photos!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a lovely day, MIss B! xoxo
Yes, yes, yes. I love this post! Pearls are timeless, chic and classy. It's amazing how a simple pearl necklace can change an outfit. I haven't worn mine for a while but this post reminded me that's it's about time I did again.
ReplyDeleteJ'ai exactement cette affiche d'Audrey Hepburn, j'adore , elle est parfaite!

Miss B, I am definitely a PEARL GIRL! My grandmother loved them and I grew fond of them as well. I use to wear a simple strand every day. I admire all of these women. Love(d) their style. Pearls are so classy. Great post!

I had several strands of pearls, both white, gray and greenish. I love them. Pearls seem to elevate anything you're wearing and add class! Great post. I click over to see your part 1.
ReplyDeleteBonjour miss b. What a treat! Pearls (love them!) and so many of my favorite glamorous ladies. Not surprised La Liz owned one of the largest - and most famous - pearls in the world! :- ) As for Karl's headset... hummmm... I am not so sure I like that "headset" piece. Not so sure Coco Chanel would approve of it either... Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)
ReplyDeleteLove it! These woman are all classics just like a good strand or 3 of pearls!!!
ReplyDeleteI BELIEVE IN PEARLS! Yes, no matter what...a pair of boyfriend jeans and a black turtleneck, a simple dress, pearls make that understated statement and we love it.
ReplyDeleteThank you so kindly for coming to visit my post! We here are waiting for spring and to hear the birds tweet on the music I have is a great promise!
Enjoy your evening, beautiful one! Anita
So many stylish worn pearls and made them even more iconic than they already were... but for me, personally, I will always associate them first and foremost with the first woman that you featured in this post, Coco Chanel. I aspire to wear pearls even half as well as she did.

Every woman loves pearls and diamonds. Truly classic!
ReplyDeletePart two was just as interesting as part one, thanks for this x
ReplyDeleteLove! So chic
ReplyDeletePearls look great on everything! I'm not quite sure how to wear them but I'll give them chance. My mother prefers wearing them and I thought I'm too young but why not? Coco Chanel and Sarah Jessica Parker wear them soo good on these pictures!
ReplyDeleteMy Mrs B loves pearls, too!

Miss B, this is one of your best post. I already told you how much love pearls, you remind me I need to wear them much more. These women are all stunning, love the Princess Diana's chocker, outstanding. You know, in Italy there is a phrase that says pearls call tears..superstitious seldom wear them cause it. Kisses dear! xo
ReplyDeleteLove this post miss b! I'm a big fan of pearls before diamonds. Love how you presented it. For me, it's still Ms Chanel who wears pearls the best. Although I have choker style, I still prefer the long chain of pearls. The Lulu Guinness scarf is still sold at V&A. The only drawback is it's size 70x70. I'd love for it to be 90x90, but I suppose 70cm can be a lovely accessory. Thank you for the heads up :)
ReplyDeleteI love pearls .. they are a classic accessory that looks beautiful on everyone. Great photos of Audrey and Coco Chanel:) Hope you are enjoying your week!
ReplyDeleteGreat structure to this post, it took me on a journey to something I hadn't really considered in detail. I must say the Karl Lagerfield accessories are fabulous. I like that he didn't just create a traditional style of pearl necklace. I don't think I wear the types of clothes that would suit pearls, but I do have a long freshwater pearl necklace from Thomas Sabo that I think I get away with wearing more casually.
ReplyDeleteLove love love Audrey and Marilyn, I've read both their biographies, such fascinating lives and don't they both wear pearls so well!
ReplyDeleteKrissie x - http://pearlsofstyle.blogspot.com.au/
I really should start wearing pearls more often, since I have a couple of pairs. They're nice, make you feel fancy.
ReplyDeleteI am a lover of pearls too
ReplyDeleteneedless to say
I enjoyed this post very much.
And I did purchased quite a few of those
chunky pearl necklaces for the holidays
and I still can't get enough of them.
i did have a strong of just cheap pearls and I loved them. Look at the pic of Marilyn, just dewy beautiful... with that lady in the background!
ReplyDeleteI always think of coco chanel when I think of pears. I think the combination of the 1920's dress and long pearls is so stunning .
ReplyDeleteI am happy to read this second part of the pearls post. I adore these stylish and glamorous women with their pearls.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved pearls and in our family every female gets a set of pearls on their 18th birthday for some reason, a tradition. But it's so special. Love the way these ladies wear them here so stylishly. Happy weekend miss b. xx
ReplyDeleteLove this post. Pearls are always trend ;-)
ReplyDeleteGreetings from Zurich!
I enjoyed browsing through all of these pictures of the women wearing pearls. I especially liked Diana's pictures, as she was a favorite of mine. She was married and had kids around the same time as I did, so I have always kept up with happenings of her life. She was such a beauty. I've always liked Jackie Kennedy too, and I love Audrey.
ReplyDeleteNow, when I see some pearls, I will think of you, my friend.
Love,
~Sheri

ReplyDeleteClassy post my dear! Pearls will never go out of style and I think your photos here show you can do just about anything with them and they look fabulous
