Regular readers of my blog already know about my obsession with afternoon tea and a surprise visit to Great John Street Hotel in Manchester was the highlight of my birthday the weekend before last.....
This beautiful building was formally a Victorian school and there are reminders throughout this sympathetically restored hotel.
Old photographs hang on the walls .......
This little boy doesn't seem too keen to be there!
This was very much a summery afternoon tea with flowers and fruit adorning the traditional three-tiered stand which was laden with sweet treats.
Our table was on the mezzanine level next to the Headmaster's Office.
Pretty mismatched china .......
As much as I would like to agree with Katherine Hepburn when she said 'Life is short. Eat dessert first', we started with the savoury part of the feast...finger sandwiches ... possibly the softest bread we have ever tasted!
The beef with horseradish filling and the smoked salmon and cream cheese were definite favourites.....
Warm scones......and the inevitable discussion followed.....jam or cream first? Once home, I decided to do my research. Apparently in Devon it's cream on the scone then jam but in Cornwall it's jam first. Arguments continue about whether Devon or Cornwall is the original or true home of the 'cream tea'. I don't care ...they're delicious however you choose to eat them!
Cakes followed ........
......with an interlude ..... fruit to cleanse and freshen the palate....
More cakes ....strawberry meringues .... A sweet, delicious birthday treat and certainly one of the prettiest afternoon teas we have seen ........
There was definitely a theme this year.......so many cards featured cakes, fashion, shoes, handbags, Paris! Friends and family know me well!
Cute cupcake gift wrap too .....
The Paris theme continued with three scented sachets and an Eiffel Tower charm ...
We need to organise a trip to Paris(maybe several!)to complete these walks ......
This nail varnish really took me by surprise ... have you spotted the name of the colour?
Particularly special as the cap is adorned with pearls, my June birthstone. Nails Inc Couture is such a clever idea. You can customise the nail polish for a truly unique, personal and useful gift and this neutral shade seems to match just about everything in my wardrobe!
I've been truly spoilt again!
are you a gemini as well? Happy birthday to you then! That afternoon tea seems like it would have been a nice place to have your cake then?
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm a Gemini too! It was the perfect place to enjoy my birthday.
DeleteHappy Belated BDay Miss B! Im glad you got spoilt, and from what I can see and read, it was the best way to spend your special day. I know your passion for afternoon tea, I need to try one as here we havent this tradition. The hotel is marvelous, all the food they served is mouthwatering, especially the sweets. You got also many beautiful gits, the nail polish with your name and the pearl is the best!:) Happy weekend! xo

what a beautiful day! Happy birthday!!!!! I am drooling over those sweeties...
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday, fellow Gemini! What a lovely way to celebrate. There is nothing so civilized as afternoon tea! And a cream tea is just beyond... clotted cream is something we just can't do right in the states and the imported jars don't taste the same. Glad you had such a lovely time. XO
ReplyDeleteAfternoon tea is always lovely but is makes for an more delightful treat when you also get to celebrate your birthday! Happy belated Birthday! Glad you enjoyed such a lovely time!

Well yes you have been spoilt, and spoilt you should be. All of the food looks like the perfect delicious treat. I had my first scone of 2014 at Selfridges last week and it was yum - I put the cream on first ha ha.

Hi Miss B and wishing you a very Happy Belated Birthday. The tea and all the treats looks just divine. What a wonderful way to spend your special day.
ReplyDeleteLove the vintage pics of the school kids. Yes that one little boy doesn't look to happy. LOL Love reading about the cream and jam. I have always put the cream first then the jam, but who knows might try it the other way too. It seems backwards. LOL
What fun with the nail polish. It is perfect for you and the name. Love the lid of gemstones. The color is perfect.
Thank you for sharing and have a wonderful rest of the weekend.
Hugs~~
